Nike IDX (Internal Developer Experience) Case Study

For Nike's 5,000+ engineers, I was tasked with helping to centralize all of the disparate software dashboards, platforms and technical documentation repositories into one centralized IDX platform this included:
Research
  • Researched and presented feature recommendations from like-minded systems (Project IDX/Firebase, Backstage...)
  • Conducted user Interviews and identified pain points as well as opportunities (Engineers, PM’s, Technical PM’s)
  • Conducted ongoing user testing during each phase of the project
Strategy
  • Worked with PM’s to clarify objectives and to establish a 12 month strategy for implementation
  • Worked with senior leadership to create an actionable plan to achieve engineering platform objectives
Product Requirements Refinement
  • Worked with technical product managers to turn user stories into create product requirements
Information Architecture
  • Analyzed disparate systems, documentation repositories and stand-alone dashboards and created a new unified architecture
User Experience Design
Designed and tested:
  • New navigation system
  • My Console (a customizable developer focussed dashboard)
  • IDX Platform landing page
  • Established design pattern for golden path templates starting with Web App’s and RESTful API’s
  • Created loose wireframes to help guide brainstorming sessions and subject matter expert discussions
  • Designed high fidelity screens and interactive prototypes for user testing
  • Partnered with engineering team to implement frontend adjusting designs to accommodate technical limitations, as well as to optimize for performance, while minimizing impacts to usability
